New high end car and marine audio line: Modus

As promised, DSP Solutions, a company with common ownership but independent from BOSS Audio in corporate structure, sourcing, manufacturing, product development and R&D, unveiled its new high end line called Modus on Wednesday evening.

The head unit line starts at $599 and goes beyond $1,000 using high quality digital to audio converters, true HD resolution screens and other high end parts.  The decks will be updatable, and start with wireless and wired CarPlay/Android Auto with high speed processing and other features, although due to the need for certification, some features may be added in updates.  Maestro and SiriusXM are expected.

The head units will include optically bonded screens for better viewing, HDMI inputs, high voltage outputs and other features.

The automotive line, which also includes amplifiers  is expected to ship this summer with speakers and subwoofers to follow around mid Q3. A marine version is due around June.

Matthew Delagado, Director of Sales at Modus, said the new head units will come in 7-, 10-, 12- and 15-inch sizes. “They all have something special,” said Delgado in a preview interview on the eve of the MasterTech Expo in Arizona.  “Most of the brands are focusing on $300, 7-inch radios.” Modus wanted to respond to what retailers are asking for, which is higher end radios including a good radio at $1,000 with the features to back it up, he said.

Of the three series of amplifiers, a mid-priced line will be unique. It will offer technology called “current averaging” for greater efficiency.  The amplifiers take in power, step it up and store it internally so they can feed it to outputs when needed. If the amplifier is playing a lower levels, it stores power.  This is different from boosted rail technology, said the company.

The three amplifier series will start at $500. More details will follow.

The initial shipment of marine products will include entry level and mid-grade radios, coaxial speakers, subwoofers and amplifiers, said Rob Osheaski, Modus Director Marine OEM (formerly of Echo Sales & Marketing).  A high end radio, tower speakers and some accessories will follow.  Current averaging will be available in a premium marine amplifier line, offering more efficiency.

  1. I Had an opportunity to see this new line firsthand at the show and was quite impressed. Multiple amp speaker and sub levels and the head units were big, had really good resolution and responded fast.

It’s great to see a new brand come out swinging with lots of gear and new tech. We need more companies like this to push the industry to new levels.

  2. I swear this industry is full of haters. Atleast they are trying something new. Beside kenwood/JVC new apx stuff. Name another headunit company that is trying to keep you guys relevant. Because I don’t know about you but the last thing I need right now is another radio in $350. Which is all that the major brands are giving you. I have my reservations about this but I’m atleast willing to look at it before talking trashing it like some of you. I appreciate that they are trying to give us more opportunities to sell.

  3. Might want to do a little more research. Tony is the name behind some of the greatest amps that Rockford Fosgate ever released, the T series amplifiers. He is also the brains behind all of the smd testing equipment that is used by a considerable amount of audio installers. You can guarantee that if he puts his name on it, it’s quality!

  4. When I was still working with Rich Coe over at the shall not be named company…. back in 2011 to 2014 he was saying THEN that the output devices being produced would’ve almost been capable of producing a TRUE 100 Watts RMS per channel IC chip amplifier that would’ve been able to fit in head units and be powered off of typical aftermarket radio harness cabling… Granted this was over 10 years ago… and it WAS only an IC class D amp chip sooo I’m sure SQ would’ve been dicey at best. Miss that dude…..

  5. Boss Audio totally SUCKS tho! I cant imagine any equivalent partnership to deliver any worthwhile equipment. The article says it all, they began with a PRICE TAG and manufacture junk equipment as a secondary thought. Will NEVER purchase another BOSS Audio anything nor any company who would pal in with them. I bet AC Delco sells more car stereos than both of these companies combined and AC Delco is nothing special, factory OE radio. These products only sell broken dreams to beginner audio guys. Do urself a favor, skip the training wheels and put ur money on anything quality, even if u have to save twice as long. I would not install their best equipment in my car even if it was given to me for free! My installation labor is worth more than the ultimate dissatisfaction that comes with bummy equipment.

    2. You are not helping the industry with this attitude.

Beginner Car Audio customers, for the most part, do not have thousands of dollars available for their beginner system. Thanks to companies like BOSS they can get the newbies into the hobby with minimal investment and good gear. Many beginners turn into enthusiasts and want bigger, better, pricier gear as years pass by. Why would you ignore these future high end customers by pricing them out of the hobby altogether?

BOSS makes great products for a very reasonable price point. BOSS saved many bottom lines during the “Great Gear Shortage” during the pandemic.. and I will never forget that. 3 year warranty on decks and 5 on their amplifiers. You can’t offer that if you are making unreliable products. High End? Nope. however, BOSS Audio does not suck.

By your logic, you would never have Lamborghini or a Bentley because they are owned by Volkswagen?

  6. i think most customers won’t pay that kind of money for a radio they never heard of.i will take the reliability of an alpine.kenwood or sony any day!

    1. Most customers have heard of Boss Audio. You can just say it has the same technology and reliability as boss head units under a higher price tag. I guess the owners at boss really figured this one out.

      1. You are correct with that. BOSS head units ARE reliable. I sold the Elite series at my last job and the failure rate on those was no different than Kenwood, Pioneer, or Sony.

        1. Bryan, I was being sarcastic. We had nothing but issues. Do yourself a favor and take one apart, not only are they poorly made but they may even have B stock components.

    2. Yessir!!! We all know not to buy stereo euipment from the same place you buy car parts.

    3. Most all my customers will. We make your experience go from listening to a radio, to experiencing a musical performance. When we’re done, you’ll have no question that it is money very well spent.

  7. Is there a website? It seems like the name Modus Audio is already taken by a high end home audio brand.

  8. It’s easier to just say that you don’t understand the tech. Most car audio lines are stagnate and at least they’re trying something different. The patent numbers are 11,205,955 & 11,594,955 if you want to read them.

  9. So is this brand the new boss elite-pro. I wouldn’t trust anything coming from them. The “ownership” that deceived their customers with ridiculous power ratings for years and years. Hard pass!

  10. Of the three series of amplifiers, a mid-priced line will be unique. It will offer technology called “current averaging” for greater efficiency. The amplifiers take in power, step it up and store it internally so they can feed it to outputs when needed. If the amplifier is playing a lower levels, it stores power.

What a load of none sense. All amplifiers store energy in their power supply capacitors and these are recharged at a rate determined by the switching frequency of the power supply and this recharging is done whether the amplifier is at idle or running at any power level.

Time for this BS to be called out. These companies attempt to sell their goodies by putting out a load of hogwash.

    1. Is this not more like what Tony D’Amore was working on? This was the same argument he was posting videos about?

    2. Stephen, a typical 1000w amplifier has maybe 20,000uF, 60V of “storage” in it’s caps. By my math that’s about 36 Joules of energy. That is enough energy to support full output for only 36 milliseconds lol. The design used in Modus amplifiers stores 792,000 Joules. Imagine the possibilities..
