OnStar’s upcoming retail mirror, which will expand its service beyond GM cars, is now expected to carried by 3,000 retailers when it launches this spring.

InstallerNet announced Thursday that many of its retail members have been pre-approved to carry the $299 mirror at launch.

3,000 retailers expected to carry OnStar mirrorAlready, OnStar has signed on about 1,600 outlets including Best Buy stores to stock the device, so the new total is expected to nearly double, InstallerNet said.

The installer network said it partnered with Ingram Micro to invite all InstallerNet retailers with a strong customer service rating to become an authorized OnStar reseller. Invitations to the dealers are being sent this week. Retailers will also get a free OnStar interactive display.

The OnStar mirror is expected to give 12 volt retailers a well-known brand and service to sell, which may boost store traffic.

The mirror has a built-in accelerometer to detect a crash. It then automatically notifies a live operator who can call emergency responders. Users can press a red button for advice in emergency situations. They also get turn-by-turn navigation, stolen vehicle assistance, roadside assistance and handsfree calling, including Bluetooth connectivity.

The mirror is currently certified to work on 99 percent of the top 20 best-selling non-GM vehicles, or about 55 million cars and trucks. OnStar will certify additional cars in coming months.
