Google officially announced its next attempt at a phone under the Google Nexus brand: the Nexus S, which is also the first smartphone to run Gingerbread, or Android 2.3.

Developed with Samsung, it also the first smartphone with a 4-inch curved glass display so it can fit more comfortably in your hand. Plus the curved glass makes more sense when you are holding it up to your ear to talk. It will be available after December 16 either unlocked or with a T-Mobile plan from Best Buy, Best Buy Mobile or online.

Gingerbread is a faster version of Android that allows new features including the ability to read NFC tags (see below). It supports Internet VoiP/SIP calling and a new keyboard and text selection tool. You also get an improved copy/past function and support for a gyroscope sensor.

Some of the features are shown in a video here.

The Nexus S has a 1GHZ Snapdragon processor and 16GB of memory.

NFC or near field communication is a short range wireless technology that can be tagged onto objects like a poster or T-shirt. Your phone can then instantly read the NFC tags placed on various objects to pick up information.
