Ford is demonstrating a car to car communication system based on WiFi and GPS that can alert the car behind you that you’ve slammed on the brakes.

This vehicle to vehicle (V2V) technology is expected to see regulation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in 2013, reports CNET. NHTSA and several car companies have joined an initiative to further V2V technology.

The technology using common GPS chips and a new WiFi standard called 802.11p could take about 5 years to deploy to cars.
