For some regional retailers, the OnStar FMV mirror that brings OnStar to almost all cars for the first time, will be available starting next week, OnStar confirmed noting that national availability of the $299 mirror will launch later this month.

OnStar said some retailers will start selling the mirror July 10.

Car Toys, Seattle, WA. lists the mirror as arriving July 15, while Al & Ed’s Autosound says the mirror is in now stock at $299 (not including installation).

OnStar retail mirror goes live July 10However, the mirror cannot be installed or activated until July 10.

BestBuy.com lists the FMV mirror as available for pre-order for $374.99 including basic installation.

The mirror extends OnStar’s telematics service with 6 million users beyond GM cars for the first time.

Al & Ed’s head purchaser John Haynes said, “Al & Ed’s is very proud to be one of the regional launch partners for OnStar FMV (For My Vehicle). One of the key things that the mobile electronics specialist needs is for manufacturers to bring products to market that drive customers into our stores. If the consumer says to themselves “Hmmmm…that looks interesting, I might want that for my vehicle”, then we can benefit from the added interest in our category.”

He added, “All of our stores are merchandised and have been through the OnStar training, plus ones that we have done ourselves. There will be a substantial advertising investment from OnStar and Al & Ed’s Autosound, so we want to be sure to capitalize on every opportunity.”

The FMV mirror’s key features are:

• Automatic Crash Response: The mirror determines that you’ve been in a crash and alerts a call in center. It uses GPS to send for help even if you don’t respond. A crash is detected through the mirror’s accelerometer plus algorithms
• Turn-by-Turn Navigation
• Emergency Services: Press a button to speak to the call center
• Stolen Vehicle Tracking: When you report your car stolen, OnStar provides real time tracking via GPS of the car to help authorities locate it.
Roadside Assistance
• Door Unlock (via Locksmith)
• Handsfree calling without your cellphone
• Bluetooth handsfree calling via cellphone
OnStar service fees start at $18.95 a month or $199 a year.

  1. I’ve had onstar on my vehicles since 2005, in fact it was a criteria for when i bought my second vehicle minutes, and i love it. Am definitely looking for the FMV version for my Mother’s car after recently loosing my Dad to give me peace of mind.As soon as its available I’m headed to Best Buy to have it installed on both of her vehicles. For somethings there is no price on peace of mind.

  2. Strangely, when I signed up 3 months ago to sell these, I was told by Ingram Micro that these would not have the Door Unlock feature. I am now curious to see what this “via Locksmith” addition is. I think customer demand for this product is perceived to be much higher than what is actually out there.

Onstar has been forced onto the GM buying public for the past 7-8 years, but I’d really be curious to see how many actually pay and keep the service after the free “included-for-a-year” program is up.

Trying to initiate and estimate demand for this product at my car dealers has been futile, NOBODY has been asking for it, and no customers that didn’t get it in their cars have said they wanted it as an add-on for $375-$400 installed plus $200/year for service.
