Verizon 4G Is Cheaper than 3G

4G LTE will be available from Verizon Wireless starting this Sunday, at prices cheaper than 3G in some instances.

Verizon will throw the switch in 38 metro areas, reaching about 1/3 of Americans. 4G phones won’t be available until mid-2011, but in the interim we can purchase 2 USB modems at for $99 each after rebate, with a contract. These can also work as 3G modems when 4G is not available.

The service is not cheap, but it can be cheaper than 3G. Verizon is charging $50 a month for 5GB of data, and $80 for 10GB. For slower 3G service, the carrier charges $60 for 5GB, says PC World. But Verizon expects that most customers will find 5GB insufficient and opt for the $80 plan.

Verizon said customers can expect speeds of 5 to 12 megabits per second when downloading and 2 to 5 Mbps when uploading, according to AllThingsD.

Sprint already offers 4G service in 68 markets and claims its service is 10 times faster than 3G so that videos take seconds to load instead of minutes and you can watching live streaming video on the go.
